About our Family

Our purpose and mission

Our purpose is to glorify the Lord. Our mission is the "Great Commission" as found in Mt. 28:19-20: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” We as a group of believers are covenanted together to strive to worship together on a regular basis. Our ambition is to admonish one another through the Word, and to minister to others through our services and through outreach. Our goal is to serve our Lord Jesus Christ in Spirit and in truth with our lives as living examples of God's grace, and desire to testify of the saving grace of God's love to our community and to the world.

Our beginnings in 1944

Redwood Country Church was started through home Bible studies with the beginning families of Ben Books, Charles Winger, John Byer, Bill Mauch, and Sam Lenhert. In the mid 40's Charles Winger owned all the property between Redwood Avenue and the Rogue River. Having a desire to honor the Lord, he was willing to sell the land which the church needed for only one dollar. Toward the end of World War II the buildings at Camp White Army base near Medford were dismantled. Several from the church moved lumber from the base to the plot in Grants Pass for building the church. Most of the lumber itself was actually from the old chapel on the base. That is how God provided for our first church building. It still stands and is now used as a fellowship hall.

Our Missionaries

Ed & Dayle Lauber

Translating in Ghana - Connecting at the deepest level for lasting impact

We are both native Oregonians from Grants Pass and members of Redwood Country Church which Ed has attended since 1962. Since 1978, we have worked in Africa with Wycliffe Bible Translators; serving in Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, DR Congo, and now Ghana. There, we are on loan to a Ghanaian organization doing Bible translation and literacy in the more than 60 languages of Ghana. We are passionate about helping Africans leverage the power of the heart language (mother tongues) to produce the lasting transformations they want in their families, communities, and nations. Steve & Sonia Armour

Christian Video Production in Brazil

Steve Armour was a native of Grants Pass. After high school he spent some time in Florida, after which he came home to earn money to go to the mission school of New Tribes Mission. After graduating, he went on to linguistic school where he excelled in Portuguese. He was assigned to Southern Brazil and while there he met the Templetons whose daughter was teaching in Panama at the time. In time they were married and they became involved in making videos that depict the Bible. Much of the area where they now live and work in Parnamirim, Brazil, looks similar to Bible lands. They and the families of their children are currently involved in a large 12 episode video production named "Tetelestai" and we will be used to thoroughly portray the message of the Bible. Their desire is to see it translated into dozens and maybe even hundreds of language. More info can be found at the website of their ministry, Light in Action. Additionally, if you can read Portuguese (or enjoy Google Translate) check out their blog and learn about some of Steve & Sonia's video and Bible study work. Photos of the ongoing video production "Tetelestai" can be found here.

Randy & Linda Wood

Reaching Tribal People for Christ - Serving in the Personnel Department

We were born and grew up in Grants Pass. Linda (Wingerd) was raised Redwood Country Church and Randy attended Murphy Chapel until we were married at Redwood in 1975, when we made Redwood our church home. We had the privilege of leading the youth group for about 6 years. In 1984, we left for Wisconsin to attend New Tribes Bible School. Our original intent was to come back to Redwood and continue in youth ministries. While at Bible School, God led us to continue on and become missionaries with New Tribes Mission. We have served in several of NTM stateside locations and then also overseas in Papua New Guinea. We have been missionaries with New Tribes Mission for over 26 years. For the past 10 years we have been serving in their Member Care Department. We help lead ongoing training workshops for our NTM missionaries and other mission organizations. We also have the privilege of spending time with our missionaries coming back from the foreign mission field where we encourage, listen to their stories, and serve as information resource providers. We also host them in our home for an overnight stay or at least a meal. Randy teaches at the New Tribes Bible School periodically as well as sits of the Regional Member Care Board. Tom & Ginna Sloan

Church Planting in Japan

Tom was originally from this area, and in the spring of 1976 Tom & Ginna became a part of Redwood Country Church. They became the youth leaders and God blessed their ministry in a special way. In 1983 they moved on from Grants Pass and sailed for Japan to serve under TEAM. They served in Japan for 30 years in church planting and mission administration with TEAM. Tom served as chairman of TEAM in Japan which is starting over 30 churches and equipping all of the churches in Japan through numerous other ministries. Tom also served as pastor/teacher at a church plant in Tokyo. The Sloan's passion in Japan has been loving people to Christ and then discipling and leading them on to become a reproducing Japanese church for God's glory. They will now be serving on home assignment, based in Corvallis, Oregon for the time being.

Other missionaries

In addition to the families mentioned above, our church directly supports another missionary faithfully serving the Lord through strategic teaching and church-planting in East Asia. Pray for her ministry and the many other missionaries serving God around the world and right here in our town.
